Governor John Carney to Congratulate Hacker Talent

Newark, DE, July 17, 2017 – This week, U.S. Cyber Challenge (USCC) hosts the 8th annual State of Delaware Summer Cyber Camp program in collaboration with the University of Delaware, Delaware State University, Wilmington University, Delaware Technical Community College (Delaware Tech) and the Delaware Department of Technology and Information (DTI) from July 17-21, 2017. This year, the camp takes place at the University of Delaware in Newark. For four days, participants will develop their cybersecurity skills through intensive classroom instruction by industry experts. On the final day, campers will compete in a cyber-attack and defense competition that will assess the skills of each individual. Immediately following the competition, an award ceremony will take place to honor the competition winners and camp participants, which will include a number of public figures recognizing camp participants.

“We’re committed here in Delaware to partnering with education leaders, and the business community, to help young Delawareans develop the skills demanded in a 21st century economy,” said Delaware Governor John Carney. “We’re proud to host the U.S. Cyber Challenge Summer Camp, and inspired by the young talent we continue to see and their potential to help build our economy and defend against cybersecurity threats.”

Attendees to the invitation-only camps were selected based in part on their scores from Cyber Quests, an online competition offered through USCC in April that drew hundreds of competitors nationally.

The week will be capped off by a virtual “Capture the Flag” (CTF) competition and awards ceremony on Friday, July 21, 2017.  The competition begins at 8:00 AM and takes place at the University of Delaware’s Memorial Hall.  The award ceremony will follow the completion of the competition at 1:30 PM. Both events are open to the media.  The awards ceremony includes a line-up of public figures and industry leaders including: Governor John Carney, State of Delaware CSO Elayne Starkey, Founder of SANS Institute Alan Paller, U.S. Cyber Challenge National Director Karen S. Evans, Dr. Chase Cotton of the University of Delaware, and video remarks from Senator Tom Carper and Senator Chris Coons.

The camp is supported in part through partnerships with Amazon Web Services, the Association for Federal Information Resources Management (AFFIRM), Adaptive Cyber, Cambridge Global, Center for Cyber Safety & Education, CenturyLink, Cyber Ninjas, Cyber Vista, Defense Point Security LLC, the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal CIO Council, (ISC)2, Monster Government Solutions, NIC, PCMG, Procession Systems, Queen Associates, SANS Institute, and Sherman Consulting. Local sponsors include Wilmington University, Delaware State University, University of Delaware, and Delaware Technical Community College.

The 2017 Cyber Summer Camp Series features three week-long camps located in Delaware, Illinois and Utah. The camps are an integral part of the USCC mission to identify and develop cybersecurity talent in order to reduce the nation’s cybersecurity workforce gap. Participants are encouraged to continue developing their skills and network with like-minded individuals by becoming active members in CyberCompEx.org, an online community specifically geared toward cybersecurity enthusiasts.
